Pit Stop for F1 Quality – Metrology and Quality News

Around the world, customers such as the Alpine F1 Team trust Volume Graphics. Not only in insightful software, but also in comprehensive advice, support and training. Volume Graphics gives them a decisive advantage: the ability to obtain reliable information and manufacture better products.

Volume Graphics is proud to support the Alpine F1® team under a multi-year agreement. Since 2016, the team has been using VGSTUDIO MAX for CT data analysis and visualization. CT and Volume Graphics have since contributed to a significant increase in the analytical capabilities of the Alpine F1 Team test lab.

How Alpine F1 Team uses volume charts

Adrian Talbot, Head of Non-Destructive Testing at Alpine F1 Team

“Personally, the use of Volume Graphics within our department, within the non-destructive testing department, creates a level of trust that we have perhaps never seen before. It gives you dimensional accuracy, it gives you a better understanding of the part as a whole. And with that comes confidence” comments Adrian Talbot, Head of Non-Destructive Testing at Alpine F1 Team.

“Knowing that this part is correct, uniform and fit for purpose is essential for us. And doing it in the timeframe Volume Graphics allows us to process is hugely beneficial to our team. With CT and using Volume Graphics software on a standard assembly, this would take 20 minutes. With the current method, like ultrasound, the whole article could take a day. So, within our non-destructive testing facility, we have never had the ability to inspect so many different materials with one method” Adrian Talbot.

“We use Volume Graphics to evaluate complex parts made with titanium additives. Inside there are very small holes that gauge the air pressure of the car going down the main strait of a racetrack. So it is very important for us to know before this is applied or fitted to the car that every channel inside this pitot tube is not blocked, has a good surface finish and that the The overall integrity of these tubes is complete and fit for purpose.

“We’re making great strides in making sure the composite brake pedal is tested vigorously. Because we can separate the part digitally, we can essentially cut the part in half without having to physically cut it in half. And that again creates a huge amount of feedback to our relevant departments, but also allows us to better understand why something went wrong.”

“I consider the Volume Graphics software to be an extremely useful tool in our toolbox. This will clearly help us develop our own processes internally and create a smoother and faster process environment within our non-destructive testing department.

“I would recommend Volume Graphics because it’s pretty easy to learn and it’s software you can do an incredible amount of analysis with” says Aude Laurence, Material Dr.Eng. & CT Advisor at Alpine F1 Team.

“Racing is the essence of what Volume Graphics stands for: speed, precision and technical excellence. Our software is used daily by many customers around the world to inspect the most advanced and complex components. But a sport level like this takes us to completely new limits, hitherto unknown. Exceeding these limits not only helps Alpine F1 Team, but all of our other customers,” says Christof Reinhart, CEO of Volume Graphics GmbH.
