Several MDC students have been recognized and advisors have been inducted into the FCSAA Hall of Fame.
Miami, April 27, 2022 – More than a dozen Miami Dade College (MDC) students representing literary journals on multiple campuses were recently recognized at the 62n/a Florida College System Annual Publications Association (FCSPA) conference and awards ceremony. Moreover, the teachers Emilie Andrea SendinAdvisor Urban magazines, and Victor CalderinAdvisor Coffee Culture magazine, have been inducted into the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Hall of Fame.
The FCSAA Hall of Fame is made up of directors, coaches, advisors, officials, students and other candidates who have contributed at least ten years to the FCSAA or any of its member institutions. They were selected by their peers based on the contributions and achievements of their community and state colleges, as well as significant accomplishments.
Professor Sendin was the adviser to Urban for 13 years, in addition to being a member of the Florida College System Publications Association since submitting the magazine’s first volume to the competition in 2008. Urban has received national awards over the past few years, including Pacemaker Finalist, Pinnacle Overall Excellence, and Community Colleges Humanities Association Individual and Overall Excellence Awards.
Professor Calderin served as co-advisor to MDC faculty Coffee Culture student magazine in literary and visual arts for 15 years. He co-founded Coffee Culture at the Hialeah campus in 2007. Since then, the magazine has won myriad FCSPA awards and two prestigious Columbia Scholastic Press Association Crown Awards. Over the past three years, Coffee Culture has won 33 awards at the national and state levels. Professor Calderin also helps organize the Miami Book Fair’s student magazine table and open-mic poetry readings in his community.
In addition to these inductions into the FCSAA Hall of Fame, this year, Coffee Culture and Urban received 2n/a and 3rd Place respectively in the General Excellence category FCSAA Publications Awards.
