McLaren Automotive announces Michael Leiters as new CEO

► Ex-Ferrari CTO now head of McLaren cars
► Leiters succeeds Mike Flewitt
► There’s a big list in his trash…

Michael Leiters, former technical director of Ferrari, has been named CEO of McLaren Automotive. Leiters succeeds Mike Flewitt who resigned in October 2021.

At McLaren, Leiters will need to steer the brand through the aftershocks of the pandemic that has hit Woking hard, keep an eye on how the long-delayed Artura launch is unfolding and work to further electrify the brand in the years. to come.

Leiters has had an incredibly solid career to date, working as a CTO at Ferrari. It is Maranello at the forefront of technological innovation while remaining true to the brand’s heritage. The Ferrari V12 is lively and dynamic thanks, in part, to him, while introducing technological stunts like the plug-in SF90 Stradale.

It also raises questions about whether Leiters could trigger a development plan to create a McLaren SUV. While Flewitt told CAR in 2020 that he wouldn’t build one, Leiters is now responsible for that position which could change. Don’t forget that Leiters had a career at Porsche and was at the forefront of the development of the original Cayenne. His stint at Ferrari saw Maranello finally confirm that an SUV-like car will arrive later in 2022.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join McLaren Automotive as CEO at this important time in its journey. McLaren is already recognized as one of the world’s most admired luxury supercar companies. I am looking forward to building on that reputation with our loyal customers, employees, fans and partners as we write the next chapter in McLaren’s illustrious history,” Leiters said in a statement on the announcement.

Paul Walsh, McLaren’s Executive Chairman, adds that “Leiters’ extensive industry leadership experience, combined with his passion for engineering and future technologies, will help guide and develop our team as we enter a exciting second decade”.

McLaren’s automotive division has announced that Leiters’ first day will be July 1, 2022.
