CMM Market Forecast to Continue to Grow – Metrology and Quality News

A recent analysis has indicated that integration with mobile and robot-mounted systems for rapid measurement is accelerating the growth of the global stationary coordinate measuring machine (CMM) market. The global stationary CMM market revenue is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8%. Automotive, aerospace, and machine shops are the major industry verticals that are expected to accelerate the demand for stationary CMMs in the coming period.

“The growing need to maximize productivity on the shop floor is driving demand for more automation and robotics. With customers demanding in-line measurement solutions to increase throughput, several vendors have introduced benchtop CMMs,” said Ram Ravi, measurement and instrumentation research analyst at Frost & Sullivan. “Additionally, CMMs equipped with scanners or multi-sensor systems are gaining prominence with the growing adoption of Industry 4.0 across manufacturing.”

Ravi added, “From a product perspective, bridge and gantry CMMs will dominate the fixed CMM space. The popularity of the CMM bridge is attributed to its affordability and its ability to offer accurate measurements. On the other hand, sectors that require high precision such as aerospace and automotive will propel the demand for gantry CMMs.

The report identified a growing customer preference for adopting a complete or piecemeal Industry 4.0 solution that will increase the need for inline measurements and inspections along with a growing need to maximize productivity on the shop floor, leading to demand for more
automation and robotics.

The report identifies the factors likely to disrupt the fixed coordinate measuring machine market including cloud computing, robotics, simulation and big data analytics which are already critical to business efficiency and whose importance is expected to increase over the next 3-4 years. 30% of the industry is in the early stages of digital transformation, with some customers already trying out integrated robot systems to automate the process.

The Frost and Sullivan report highlights growth opportunities for the fixed coordinate measuring machine market, including robotic automation to help CMMs manipulate components to improve throughput, EV tracking, and fuel cells to increase the growth prospects of the CMM market as well as the trend of additive manufacturing.
