Blockbuster just released The Batman highlights the use of a Nirvana song.
Now the comic book vehicle stars Robert Pattinson in the lead role, playing a traumatized Bruce Wayne in a battle of wits with Paul Dano’s villain, The Riddler.
Earning critical acclaim for its gritty realism, The Batman is dominated by one song in particular on its soundtrack.
The guitarist’s motif of Nirvana’s “Something In The Way” permeates the song, becoming a sort of plot device in itself.
Talk to Esquiredirector Matt Reeves comments, “Early on when I was writing, I started listening to Nirvana, and there was something about [Nevermind song] ‘Something in the Way’, which is in the first trailer, which is part of this character’s voice.
“When I thought, ‘How do you do Bruce Wayne in a way that’s never been seen before?’ I started to think, ‘What if tragedy happens [ie: Wayne sees his parents murdered] and this guy gets so reclusive, we don’t know what he’s doing? Is this guy some kind of wayward, reckless drug addict? And the truth is he’s kind of a drug addict. His drug is his addiction to this impulse for revenge. He’s like a Batman Kurt Cobain.
For his part, The Riddler actor Paul Dano highlighted the song as a key influence on his portrayal of the character during an interview with NME.
He said: “Well, in the script, Matt had actually mentioned ‘Something In The Way’ by Nirvana. So there, this song, these words, this chorus, became extremely important to me. Nirvana became part of it [character].”
