Literary Magazine Receives Gold Critic Medal from Columbia Scholastic Press Association

MACON – Mercer University Literary Magazine, The Dulcimerreceived a Gold Medalist Critique from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) for the 2020-2021 edition.

CSPA is an international student press association, founded in 1925 to unite student journalists and educational advisers in schools and colleges through educational conferences, the exchange of ideas, textbooks, reviews and curricula. rewards.

The association offers its award-winning reviews each year to help student print or online media improve their end product. Newspapers, magazines, directories or online media are welcome to submit numbers or hyperlinks to CSPA’s experienced Judge Advisors.

Medalist Critiques contains a set of written standards developed by CSPA to detail best practices for student media. A judge-adviser reads the print or online publication and analyzes its strengths and weaknesses as described by the reviewer, writes comments and makes constructive suggestions to build on current strengths and correct shortcomings.

A Gold Medal review is the highest honor offered by CSPA, representing a total score between 800 and 1,000 points.

“I continue to be amazed by the creativity and imagination of The Dulcimer staff who approach this project with thoughtfulness and enthusiasm. I am proud of their continued success and the high caliber of artistic works featured in the publication,” said Craig Coleman, Professor and Director of Art and Faculty Advisor at The Dulcimer.

The Dulcimers 2020-2021 Edition, Vol. LIV, featured the theme “Labyrinth” and included nearly 100 pages of art and literature produced by Mercer students, faculty, and alumni.

“The ‘Labyrinth’ theme really resonated last year, which made it a great magazine,” said Cecelia Poehlman, current editor who served as editor and designed the magazine’s cover. last year. “Personally, I learned a lot from my experiences with ‘Labyrinth’ which helped me this year as editor. The Dulcimer provides many opportunities for its staff to learn and develop new skills, and it shows when we send the magazine to the competition.

“I joined The Dulcimer staff as a general staff member my freshman year, and I knew I had found something special. I had the good fortune of being an editor for two years, which reinforced my love for the art community at Mercer. It was truly rewarding to be part of an organization that takes student art and literature and makes it something every Mercerian can enjoy,” added alumnus Emily Bartlett, who served as editor for the 2020-2021 edition. “The Dulcimer not only gives students the opportunity to put publishing credit on their resume, but more importantly, the magazine gives students the opportunity to see or read their work by hundreds of other people. I’m so grateful to have found The Dulcimer, and I can’t wait to see what the magazine does next.

Originally published in 1966, The Dulcimer is a student-run publication that promotes appreciation and love of the arts through the publication of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and artwork in all mediums.
