Katie Dinan (USA) made her return to the Traverse City horse shows and arrived in winning form, taking first and third place in the two-phase $37,000 CSI3* 1.45m on Friday morning.

Dinan rode three of his risers in Friday’s event, which hosted 33 international entrants on a track designed by Mauricio Garcia (COL). The Wellington-based rider improved her time with every ride she made.

With his second mount in the class, Atika Des Hauts Vert, owned by Grant Road Partners LLC, Dinan chased the time of 28.03 seconds set by runner-up Kelli Cruciotti VanderVeen (USA) and Forever SVN, owned by Springpaarden Fonds Nederland . Narrowly, Dinan clocked a time of 29.94 seconds in the speed phase, which dropped below 30 seconds to clinch a podium place for Atika Des Hauts Verts, but that wasn’t enough to take the head.

Dinan returned aboard 12-year-old Selle Français stallion Athos D’Elle (Apache D’Adriers x Papillon Rouge) owned by Grand Road Partners LLC, ranked 26 and put it all on the line, clearing the times in a speed phase time of 27.63 seconds.

“I saw Kelli on her horse and she was super fast,” Dinan commented. “I went right after her on Atika and I thought I was very quick, but I was still a second behind so I knew I really had to take a risk. It was good that it paid off. »

“I like a [two-phase] class,” Dinan continued. “It’s nice at the start of the week because it gives you the first phase to let you feel comfortable in the ring, the horses get to grips with things and then you can start to be faster in the second. phase. [Athos] is a 12 year old with a lot of experience now. He really fought for me today and tried to win the class too, which is always a great feeling.

Between Dinan and his coach, Swiss Olympic silver medalist Beat Mändli, several stars faced off this week at the Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel International Ring. “It’s great to be here,” Dinan told the site. “I was laughing to myself yesterday that I no longer need to use GPS with my rental car as we have been coming so often over the past few years. I think that says a lot about the fact that this is an excellent establishment. The foot here is fantastic. For horses, it’s a really nice place.

While her best mount, Brego R’N B, rests during this series, the five-time FEI World Cup finalist puts precious miles on her three mounts in development to aim for similar achievements. “I thought two CSI3* shows would be perfect for them. These are – I hope – my horses for the future. I’m hoping to go to Europe for about six weeks after these shows, so it’s a great place to prepare.
