Here are the winners of the 2022 Whiting Literary Magazine Awards. ‹ Literary Center

Today, the Whiting Foundation announced the winners of its 2022 Literary Magazine Awards, which recognize “the most innovative and essential publications at the forefront of American literary culture.” The five winners were chosen – from an initial group of more than eighty nominees – based on their “excellence in publishing, writer advocacy and a unique contribution to the strength of the literary community as a whole”.

“This award was designed to create cohorts capable of meeting common challenges with courage and imagination, and it’s exciting to imagine the conversations these terribly diverse magazines will have,” said Courtney Hodell, director of literary programs, in a communicated. “We look forward to learning with them and from them.”

The winners of the 2022 draw are:

ZYZZYVA (San Francisco, CA), a must-have West Coast publication with national reach, an exquisite reading experience and top-notch design.

Mid-Budget Print Award Winner (Budget $150,000-$500,000)

Bennington Review (Bennington, VT), a relaunch of a distinguished scholarly publication – a visually stunning journal with an imaginative and sophisticated vision that provides hands-on experience for the next generation of publishers.

Low Budget Print Award Winner (Budget Under $150,000)
Total price: $30,000

American chordates (Brooklyn, NY), a budding independent magazine full of thought-provoking interactions between text and visual art – a careful assemblage of young writers and artists alongside established talent.

Print Development Grantee (budget under $50,000)
Total price: $15,000

And the 2022 digital winners are:

Apogee Newspaper (New York, NY), an incubator for multicultural writers with a finger on the pulse of the literary landscape and an established reputation for publishing rising stars.

Electrical literature (Brooklyn, NY), a buzzing news and ideas contest featuring compelling essays, short stories with insightful context, and incisive critical coverage of the literary world.
